Where’s Your Tennessee?

One of my favorite songs growing up was “Tennessee” by Arrested Development. At the time, the reasons for liking any music only dealt with my budding independence in the music of the era and if the song had a great beat. I could recite the lyrics verbatim but I wasn’t listening to the meaning  of the message, not until a couple of years ago. Something resonated differently  as I listened to the lyrics that have been heard over the past 20 years. As Speech, the lead rapper took you on a tale of crying out to God for something more and fulfilling in his life asking questions for guidance along the way, I then understood what was going on. “Tennessee” was the place that God guided Speech to find himself, because he needed to rebuild spiritually. “Tennessee” can be where you have dreamed of going or where God will send you to get you out of complacency or trouble.

Have you felt this way? When you look around each and everyday and notice that folks are continuously heading the same direction, never veering off their path of craziness, destruction,  and/or drama? It can feel like you are going down with them. Or have you ran out of resources (job, money, etc) and ideas and you don’t what or where to go next? Reaching this point in one’s life signifies that person is ready for change. It’s a mature level not most people are keen to venture because fear holds them back. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own“(Matt 6:34 NIV). Jesus said it best in that line. We are not to worry about tomorrow but to at least try for today, and the next day, and so on.

But we are fearful, why? Because of the concept of failure and rejection; in having to face friends or family, or admitting to yourself that you couldn’t do it. We are the harshest critics because we have the biggest dreams and goals for ourselves and when we shudder away or barely reach over step one, it wasn’t worth it or the idea was stupid. Thinking in terms of fear can wreak havoc on the spirit and will eventually fracture the psyche.

Have you ever wanted to move forward or someplace different? “Tennessee” can be a new location or a new idea. It will be where you prosper because God will be there along side you. He will guide you there and help set things into motion by putting certain people in your life or opening doors of opportunity. But in order for you to see that “Tennessee” is where you need to be or venture into, you have to notice the signs. You can’t fight the Holy Spirit as it pushes you, because it will fight back! So when you get there, you have to roll with the ebb and flow of the waves and not run back to your comfort zone. The process is to build you up not tear you down; so IF it doesn’t work out, at least you tried. God will see that you are open and will try again with you.  But you have to TRY!
